1965 Cadillac Convertible Deville Resto Rod Details

RECENT REBUILT MORE MODERN 472 ENGINE, NEW RADIATOR,  MODERN POWER DISC BRAKES FRONT AND REAR, MODERN OVERDRIVE 2004r TRANSMISSION, 9 INCH HEAVY DUTY REAR, COLD AIR CONDITIONING, HEAT, JUST DROVE CHICAGO TO LOS ANGELES ON ROUTE 66! = Very Reliable

We used this car for our classic car tours Ride Free Classic Car and Motorcycle Tours.  I bought it and outfitted it for use for our classic car tours going 3,000 miles Chicago to LA on Route 66. Some of the work had already been done, but we had the engine rebuilt and have done lots of work since we have had it.  We since have decided to stop offering the classic tours, so I am selling the car.  If not there is no way I would sell this car after all the work we have done to it to make it such a reliable cruiser.  

This modernized Cadillac Cadillac Convertible is in good cosmetic shape and great mechanical shape! With it’s recent rebuilt more modern 472 engine and overdrive transmission it is a great quiet  cruiser, or floor it and it is a muscle car Cadillac.  Hop in, grab a few friends and go for a cruise down Pacific Coast Highway or Chicago to Los Angeles on Route 66!  Black paint and a solid body gives a solid foundation. 

The recently rebuilt engine starts right up, runs great and the modern overdrive transmission shifts correctly like it should. It tracks in a nice straight line right down the highway. The modern front and rear power disc brakes stop so much better than the old drum brakes.  Steering is very tight with the more modern power steering gear box than the original steering,  and it handles great cruising down the road with the added on performance front sway bar, rear lower tubular control arms, and large optional rear sway bar. The car rides nice, but surprisingly handles very well with all the sway bars on, more like a sports car in turns, and is super steady at top highway speeds.  Absolutely nothing like the floaty cloud handling of an unmodified similar car.  But, just unbolt the sway bars if you like and it will give the Cadillac float with a more rolling body etc in turns…. The wider than stock rims accommodate the added front and rear disc brakes and add stability.  The car still looks pretty much stock with all this work done.  Except there is a cool rake / forward slant to the car, which could be changed in the rear to level if you wanted to do so.   The engine has a little more power than stock ( though is a great cruiser ) with the 4 barrel carburetor and aluminum intake.  It has a stock cam which makes it a nice cruiser, but one one do a cam change to really wake up this car.  The exhaust flows through a 3 inch custom exhaust with a cross over pipe.  It has a nice quiet tone, with a little rumble when under hard throttle.

Engine
recently rebuilt earlier this year, 1974 472 V8 engine by top machine shop.   Total rebuild.  Have receipts.
More modern and reliable than stock 1965 engine

Transmission
More modern overdrive transmission has been added giving a 4th overdrive gear for low rpm highway cruising in the fast lane…

started with a 1987 Buick Grand National  2004 R Overdrive transmission with the good servos and valve body
new hardened clutch pac with more discs,
hardened overdrive sprag
hardened input shaft
all billet aftermarket parts inside
1600 stall torque converter with lock up
B&M lock up torque converter controller = you can adjust on the dash when the coverter locks up
Just rebuilt and balanced custom driveshaft / new ujoints and yoke
slight shift kit: shifts nice cruising, but if you put pedal to floor ( not needed to accelerate onto highway ) then you can chirp tires when shifting

Brakes
More modern power disc brakes front and rear ( original had dangerous old drum brakes )
front disc brakes and spindles bolt on stock from a 1970 Deville
rear disc brakes from a 1996 Ford Explorer
More modern power brake booster and more modern dual reservoir disc brake master cylinder
Stops car awesome at highway speeds or down hills and mountains etc..

Ford Nodular 9 Inch ( the industry standard for heavy duty rears )

Heavy duty Mosier axles – 36 spline – set up for Cadillac lug pattern
Just rebuilt new Positraction Unit
3.70 gear ratio- give great performance acceleration, but with overdrive transmission it is a low rpm cruiser on the highway

Suspension
added on front large sway bar
large rear sway bar custom added on – keeps car flat in cornering and high speeds.  I currently have off for a softer ride.
just added new large, heavy duty, adjustable tubular lower control arms
The front suspension was just gone through and had some items replaced as needed.
1976 quick ratio Cadillac Deville power steering box gives better tighter steering than 1965, w 1976 style power steering pump

Mechanical

Speedometer is accurate now, correct speedo gears in transmission

Wipers:  Electric and have been updated with a wiper delay option, knob on /under dash to control intermittent delay

Convertible Top
about 4 years old looks great,  but not perfect

Heat and Air Conditioning
More modern manual slide controls installed verse old problamatic style, a great upgrade
Heat: defrost and heater both work well
Air Conditioning: blows cold, used R12 ( you can still actually get R12 ).  It works best with the R12.

Sound System
we have installed a new sound system under the dash / didn’t cut dash.
Just plug your phone in to a cord and play your tunes if you like, or a usb, or an SD card.
Power antenna goes up and down from original looking radio that has been redone with modern internals, but was cutting off and on, so we just bypassed
– you could hook this back up also if you like

Interior
original black leather – look at pictures below
in nice shape, some little holes on rear seat where sit but  not bad
front seats in good shape, but could use a little work to be perfect where the cushions attach to the frame
don’t get me wrong, the interior is nice, just not perfect, look at pics

cigarette lighter works to plug your accessories into on dash, and under the dash on the right side there is another added auxiliary socket to plug into

Dash

B&M adjustable control unit on dash for lock up torque converter
gas gauge works correctly, dash temperature gauge works
also Steward Warner added: temp, volts, oil pressure gauge cluster under dash for exact reading

The electric windows make a good seal between the top and the top of the windows, commonly there is a huge gap here that takes lots of ( already done ) work to make sealed up and “right”

this is not a car that was ever rusted all up
the panels are pretty darn straight, not show car, but not all wobbly either at all
the paint is older, looks great walking up to it and if not looking hard
# I will be hard on the car below as if I was inspecting the paint for you:
but if you examine it you see chips on the front of the hood from use, some scratches and other chips on the car, look at pictures closely
no dents, no real dings
the car looks great, is shiny etc. people ohh and ahh over it, but if you want to inspect it, there are flaws from use for sure
there are a couple spots where the paint is showing it’s age, see pics, but overall glossy and straight
a couple of small bubbles behind the rear window and seam of the body and quarter panel on top, very common
doors all close and open correctly from inside and outside.  All locks work.
Have a number of duplicate spare keys.

stainless and bumpers are in good shape, not perfect, but nice
could use a little bumper / front end body alignment, but most people never ever notice this, I just want to pick apart now, not once you have the car in your driveway
